  10.                           WELCOME TO BOOKBANK!
  11.  
  12.      BookBank is the program to help you manage your book
  13.      collection.  Not a program, THE program.  I am so sure of this
  14.      that I want you try the program before you pay for it.  This
  15.      evaluation version of the program is not limited in any way. 
  16.      It is fully functional and extremely powerful.  
  17.  
  18.      Many years of experience in both the book business and the
  19.      computer programming arena that have gone in to producing
  20.      a program that is not only easy to learn and use, but
  21.      does what you need.
  22.  
  23.      Knowing what you have, who you have loaned books to, and
  24.      what you need will enable you to get the most out of your
  25.      collection, whether that collection is for enjoyment or
  26.      investment.  You will be amazed at how quick and easy it
  27.      all is!

  29.      BookBank will enable you to spend less time with all the
  30.      record keeping of book collecting.  This will enable you spend
  31.      more time doing what you really enjoy -- collecting books!

  35.      HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
  36.  
  37.      The following is the minimum hardware required to run
  38.      BookBank:
  39.  
  40.          An IBM PC compatible computer with at least 512K free RAM
  41.           (random access memory) running DOS version 3.0 or later.
  42.  
  43.          At least 1 floppy drive and a hard drive. 
  44.  
  45.          Any monochrome or color monitor.
  46.  
  47.          A printer is necessary for producing reports, invoices,
  48.           orders, etc...
  49.

  51.      INSTALLATION
  52.  
  53.      Make sure the computer is running and that you are in the root
  54.      directory of the hard drive on which you want BookBank
  55.      installed. This can be any hard-drive but for example we will
  56.      assume you are using drive C:.  You can do this by typing the
  57.      following to commands:
  58.           C:
  59.           cd\
  60.  
  61.  
  62.      If you are installing BookBank from a floppy disk, insert the
  63.      BookBank disk into your computer's floppy disk drive. Next,
  64.      change to the drive in which you put the BookBank disk.  For
  65.      example, if you put the disk in drive A: then you would type:
  66.           A:

  68.      If you are installing BookBank from your hard-drive, all you
  69.      need to make sure that you are in the drive and directory
  70.      where the installation files are located.
  71.  
  72.      Start the installation program by typing:
  73.           INSTALL
  74.  
  75.      When the installation program begins running, you will be
  76.      given a menu of choices.  From that menu you can read all of
  77.      the documentation files.  While reading the information you
  78.      can print get help by pressing F1, or print them by pressing F2.
  79.      You can get out of the text reading screen by pressing Esc.
  80.      When you are done reading, you can begin the program installation
  81.      by selecting the "Install BookBank" choice.
  82.  
  83.      When you select to install the program, you will be asked for
  84.      the name of the directory in which you want the program installed.
  85.      The default name is "C:\BOOKBANK." If a directory by that name
  86.      already exists you mignt want to choose a different name.  Just
  87.      type in that new name and press Enter.
  88.  
  89.      After all of this information has been given, the screen will
  90.      then clear, and the installation program will tell you what is
  91.      happening as the installation takes place.  First the program
  92.      will make a directory called "C:\BOOKBANK", or the different
  93.      name you provided, on your hard-drive.  Then the BookBank
  94.      program and all of the associated files used by the program
  95.      will be extracted from the archive and copied into that
  96.      directory.

  98.      When the files have been extracted and copied, the
  99.      installation is done!  Before you can begin using BookBank,
  100.      however, you will need to setup the program as described in
  101.      the next section.   Remember, if your CONFIG.SYS file was
  102.      changed, you will need to restart your computer after the
  103.      installation process, so that the changes can take affect.

  105.      NOTE:  The lines "BUFFERS=20" and "FILES=30" must be in
  106.      your CONFIG.SYS file.  (The values can be greater than 20 and
  107.      30, but not less.)  Please make sure that you have the CONFIG.SYS
  108.      file set up properly.  The program may not run if this is not done.
  109.      If the CONFIG.SYS file did not have these statements or values
  110.      originally, you will need to restart your computer after the
  111.      installation process, so that these changes can take affect.

  115.      SET UP
  116.  
  117.      After the program is installed on your computer, the first
  118.      thing that needs to be done is the setup.  This process
  119.      creates some required files, so before doing anything else
  120.      with the program let's do the setup!  If the program is not
  121.      already running, use the steps in the section below to
  122.      start it.

  124.      When you start the program for the first time, you will be
  125.      asked if you want to create the index files.  Answer this
  126.      question by pressing the Y key.  If you press N,  you will be
  127.      taken back to DOS since the index files are a must to run the
  128.      program.  When indexing process finishes, you will be at
  129.      BookBank's Main Menu.

  131.      Now, to do the setup, you need to go to the section of the
  132.      program entitled "Setup."  To do this you can simply
  133.      press S.  You could also use the cursor keys to highlight the
  134.      "Setup" selection and then press Enter, but it is
  135.      much easier and quicker to type the number of the menu
  136.      selection you want.

  138.      Next you need to tell BookBank about yourself.  Select
  139.      "User Profile" from the menu.  You will now be faced
  140.      with a screen asking you for all kinds of information.
  141.      Fill it out completely and carefully.  When you are done,
  142.      you will be asked if everything is correct, and then you
  143.      will be taken back to the Setup Menu.
  144.  
  145.      You have now completed the setup of your system.  There are
  146.      other things that can be configured to your liking, but they
  147.      are discuss in later the manual.

  149.      At this point, you can start using the program!
  150.

  152.      STARTING THE PROGRAM
  153.  
  154.      To start BookBank from DOS, simply type BOOKBANK and press
  155.      Enter from the disk and directory in which the program
  156.      resides.  If you followed the installation procedure as
  157.      described above, and installed the program to the C: drive,
  158.      the following command sequence will always work to start the
  159.      program:
  160.

  162.           cd\bookbank
  163.           bookbank
  164.  
  165.      After a short wait a screen will appear that tells you that
  166.      this is an evaluation copy of the program.  After you have
  167.      read this screen, press any key and the title screen will pop
  168.      up, and then shortly there after the Main Menu will appear.

  170.      If you have a black and white or monochrome monitor, you can
  171.      start BookBank in non-color mode by using a "/m" switch after
  172.      the program name.  (Note: This is normally not necessary.)
  173.      From then on the program will start up in monochrome mode
  174.      unless you reset it to color by way of the "User Profile"
  175.      choice from the Setup Menu.

  177.      Therefor, to start the program in monochrome mode you would
  178.      type:

  181.           bookbank /m

  185.      EXITING THE PROGRAM
  186.  
  187.      You should always exit BookBank through the Quit command from
  188.      the Main Menu.  As the program shuts down it updates some
  189.      important files and indexes.  If you do not exit this way
  190.      some of your valuable data may be lost or damaged.

  194.      HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS
  195.  
  196.      BookBank is divided into five basic sections. Each section
  197.      is available from the main menu.  Each section handles a
  198.      different type of task.  The sections are as follows: 
  199.  
  200.      The first allows helps you to manage your books and is
  201.      where you add, edit, delete, and loan your books.
  202.  
  203.      The second section keeps track of contacts and the things
  204.      relating to those contacts. 
  205.  
  206.      The third section is to keep track of wanted items and to
  207.      produce want-lists.
  208.  
  209.      The fourth section is for generating reports on your books
  210.      and contacts.
  211.  
  212.      The fifth section is for setup is where your profile is
  213.      recorded and certain other "vital statistics" can be set
  214.      and modified.
  215.  
  216.      As stated before, each of these sections corresponds to a
  217.      selection from the main menu and each section has its own
  218.      sub-menu where you choose specific operations.  You choose a
  219.      selection by either pressing the key that corresponds to the
  220.      letter of the choice or by using the cursor keys to scroll
  221.      through the list of choices and then pressing the Enter key
  222.      when the correct choice is highlighted.  The last selection
  223.      available from this Main Menu exits the program.

  225.      BookBank uses the dBASE file format so that all records are
  226.      in the most widely used and one of the most easily translated
  227.      formats in use today.  By using this format BookBank has made
  228.      export and import between other programs simple.
  229.      
  230.      BookBank calls people contacts.  All people you associate with
  231.      are called contacts instead of some being called dealers, others
  232.      being called friends, and still others libraries.  The ability
  233.      to differentiate between contacts by their primary function
  234.      is maintained however.

  236.      The Manual
  237.      When the BookBank program was installed a document named
  238.      "BOOKBANK.DOC" was copied into the same directory as the
  239.      program.  This is the evaluation version of the reference
  240.      manual for the program.  You can print out this manual by
  241.      typing the following from the drive and directory where you
  242.      installed BookBank:

  244.           COPY BOOKBANK.DOC PRN

  246.      The manual is in standard ASCII format so it could also be
  247.      loaded into most word processors.  Be aware that in the manual
  248.      has a table of contents, a glossary and a section on the most
  249.      frequently asked questions and problems.  A more complex
  250.      manual, professionally printed and indexed, is included with
  251.      registration.

  278.      LICENSE
  279.  
  280.      The evaluation version of BookBank is a Shareware program
  281.      and is provided at no charge to the user for evaluation. 
  282.      Feel free to share it with your friends, but please do not
  283.      give it away altered or as part of another system.  The
  284.      essence of Shareware software is to provide personal
  285.      computer users with quality software without high prices,
  286.      and yet to provide incentive for programmers to continue to
  287.      develop new products.  If you find this program useful and
  288.      find that you are using BookBank and continue to use
  289.      BookBank after the 45 day trial period, you must make a
  290.      registration payment of $50 to Michael Carnell.  The $50
  291.      registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
  292.      computer at any one time.  You must treat this software just
  293.      like a book.  An example is that this software may be used
  294.      by any number of people and may be freely moved from one
  295.      computer location to another, so long as there is no
  296.      possibility of it being used at one location while it's
  297.      being used at another.  Just as a book cannot be read by two
  298.      different persons at the same time neither should a software
  299.      package be used by two people at the same time.

  301.      Commercial users of BookBank must register and pay for
  302.      their copies of BookBank within 45 days of first use or
  303.      their license is withdrawn.  Site-License arrangements may
  304.      be made by contacting Michael Carnell.

  306.      You are encouraged to pass a copy of the Shareware version
  307.      of BookBank along to your friends for evaluation.  Please
  308.      encourage them to register their copy if they find that they
  309.      can use it.  All registered users will receive a copy of the
  310.      latest version of the BookBank system plus additional
  311.      benefits listed below.

  314.      REGISTRATION AND ORDERING INFORMATION

  316.      Registering BookBank allows you to legally use the product
  317.      after the trial period.  When you register your copy of
  318.      BookBank you will be sent the full professionally printed
  319.      manual.  The manual includes many examples, tips, a full
  320.      index, reference section, users guide, glossary and much
  321.      more.  In addition registered BookBank users get the
  322.      current copy of BookBank on disk (without the "Press any
  323.      key..." entry screen) along with their own serial number,
  324.      free bug-fixes and minor-updates, mailed notification of
  325.      major BookBank upgrades, and priority when calling for
  326.      BookBank software support (we can guarantee no support to
  327.      unregistered users).  Most importantly, registered users
  328.      know they are helping to make sure that high-quality
  329.      software like BookBank continues to be sold in this
  330.      low-cost way.

  332.      BookBank registration costs $50 US and includes all the
  333.      benefits listed above.  An evaluation disk with the current
  334.      version of BookBank and a condensed manual on it is also
  335.      available for $5 US.  This is to be used only to try out
  336.      BookBank and does not include any of the associated
  337.      benefits of registration (the right to use BookBank after
  338.      the 45 day evaluation period, etc...).  The $5 fee covers
  339.      the cost of diskette(s) and handling.
